About Bitcoin Strategy ETF

The Bitcoin Strategy ETF (BITO), managed by ProShares, is a futures ETF with an inception date of October 15, 2021, becoming the first Bitcoin futures ETF to trade in the United States. Unlike spot ETFs, which directly hold the underlying asset (in this case, Bitcoin), a futures ETF invests in Bitcoin futures contracts. This means BITO tracks the price of Bitcoin futures contracts traded on commodity exchanges, rather than the current market price of Bitcoin itself. As a result, the performance of a futures ETF like BITO may differ from the spot price of Bitcoin due to factors such as contract rollover and futures market conditions. BITO charges an annual management fee of 0.95%.

ProShares is a prominent asset management firm recognized for its role in the ETFs sector, particularly in the context of innovative financial products linked to the digital asset industry. Established in 2006, ProShares has developed a reputation for creating investment solutions that cater to a diverse range of financial goals and market conditions.

In October 2021, ProShares made a significant advancement in the digital asset realm by launching the ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF (BITO), which became the first U.S.-based Bitcoin-linked ETF to receive approval from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). This ETF does not directly invest in Bitcoin but instead offers exposure to bitcoin futures contracts. It is managed in accordance with the Investment Company Act of 1940 and trades on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). Through this product, ProShares provides investors a way to gain exposure to Bitcoin price movements without the need to directly hold the cryptocurrency, thus facilitating access to the digital asset market within a regulated investment framework.

ProShares operates under the umbrella of ProFunds Group, which encompasses both ProShares and ProFunds, and is headquartered in Bethesda, Maryland. The firm is known for its focus on offering a wide array of investment strategies that include not only ETFs but also mutual funds, structured to address various market dynamics and investment needs.

In the broader digital asset ecosystem, ProShares contributes by bridging traditional financial markets with emerging digital asset technologies, enabling institutional and retail investors to participate in cryptocurrency markets through familiar investment vehicles. By aligning its offerings with regulatory standards, ProShares plays a critical role in enhancing the accessibility and legitimacy of cryptocurrency-related investments within the financial industry.
